Crude Oil Classifications
The four base types of crude oil.
| Classification | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Paraffin based | High in wax and lube oil fractions, containing small amounts of naphthalenes or asphalt; low in sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen compounds. |
| Asphalt based | High in pitch, asphalt and heavy fuel oil. |
| Mixed base | Characteristics midway between paraffin and asphalt bases. |
| Aromatic base | High in molecular weight aromatic compounds and naphthalene, with smaller portions of asphalt and lube oils. |
Crude oil specific gravity is typically .78 to .91. See liquid specific gravities for other oils and fuels.
